Transforming Organic Waste

To Green Energy
For Cooling

Project Overview

Step 1: Waste Collection

The process begins with the collection of organic waste from various sources, such as households, markets, and food processing industries. This waste, which would otherwise end up in landfills, is now a valuable resource for KijaniBox.

Step 2: Biogas Generation

The collected organic waste is fed into an anaerobic digester, a specialised container that facilitates the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. This natural process produces biogas, a renewable energy source composed primarily of methane.

Step 3: Thermal Energy Conversion

The biogas is utilised to generate thermal energy (hot water) through heat exchangers. The thermal energy is used to power a  low-temperature, heat-driven absorption chiller to produce cooling and freezing effects. This system enables normal cooling (NC) and deep freezing (DF) for perishable goods, ensuring food quality and reducing post-harvest losses.

Step 4: Organic Fertilizer Production

The byproduct of the anaerobic digestion process is a nutrient-rich digestate, a valuable organic fertiliser. This fertiliser is distributed to local farms, enriching the soil and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

Step 5: Food Preservation and Distribution

The refrigeration units powered by KijaniBox provide a safe and reliable way to preserve food products, extending their shelf life and reducing food waste. This allows small businesses in the food supply chain to store and transport their products more efficiently, ensuring that food reaches consumers in good condition.

Step 6: Closing the Loop

The use of organic fertilizer in local farms completes the cycle, as the crops grown with this fertilizer can then provide organic waste for the KijaniBox system, creating a closed-loop sustainable energy solution.
